FRS – FLEX

Diverse and Flexible Coping Strategies (FLEX) is a strategy based on industry guidance (NEI 12-06) to implement Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Order EA-12-049, which requires implementation of mitigation strategies for beyond-design-basis external events (BDBEE). FRS-FLEX provides the ability to design, build and integrate a FLEXible equipment strategy into a plant’s existing FRS Model based on proceduralized, pre-staged, portable equipment.

Why choose FLEX?

FLEX can be used to design, evaluate, improve, and control. Once an FRS Application is built, it can be used to understand operational pinch-points. Mitigation strategies can then be designed using dedicated portable equipment guidelines, as described in NEI 12-06. FRS-FLEX can graphically depict equipment storage locations, portable hose routings, and electrical and mechanical connections to existing systems. With FLEX strategies implemented, FRS can simultaneously show both impacts and availability of normal plant systems and FLEX equipment. When used in conjunction with the FRS-RAD Module, calculated radiological dose and radiation levels can be graphically displayed to help direct implementation of mitigation strategies while also managing ALARA concerns.
